Lillooet Historic Sites
This guided tour of Lillooets' best known historic sites takes about an hour and is considered easy walking.
First stop is the Museum, home to an extensive display of native artifacts, gold rush era relics, and the Lillooet Visitor Centre.
A short walk brings us to the the Miyazaki Heritage House. Built by Lillooets' first Gold Commissioner, Caspar Phair, in the 1880's, this splendid manor was originally called Longford House. It became the home and office of Dr. Masajiro Miyazaki in 1945, and he donated the house to Lillooet in 1983.
Rows rock piles remain where Chinese gold miners worked the gravel and created the wealth that established Lillooet. Rock pilings are common in the Lillooet landscape, and we'll see some as we walk to the Hangmans Tree Park. The old tree was used as a gallows more than 100 years ago by Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie "the Hanging Judge" of the Cariboo Gold Rush. A box lunch is available for the visit to the Park.
Last stops will be St Andrews church and the old Camel Barn which served as a livery stable when camels were used as pack animals for the trek to Barkerville.
